This collection of tunes offers specific “readings” of shape note hymns from the Sacred Harp tradition - specifically the 1835 edition of William Walker’s The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion www.loc.gov/resource/music.musihas-200038824/?sp=5&st=image. Shape note singing is an early American singing practice over 200 years old, made of many collections of religious, secular, and popular tunes whose aim was fostering large-scale group singing and widespread musical literacy, and highlighting the complex issues of a forging new “American” identity. Rather than approaching the sources through singing, the duo translates these readings to a pair of 125+ year old wooden Estey pump organs - nodding to the ordinary, domestic, and spiritual spaces in which this vernacular music was practiced.
Drawing upon their extensive experience in experimental sound practices, Olencki and Schrey unearth the interior combinatorial tones and inharmonic resonances already held within the old tunes. Through this series of treatments, they aim to illuminate possible futures of this repertoire, extending not only the tradition but the fundamental sounds themselves into novel configurations. In a way, the music of their Southern Harmony is one and the same as Walker’s, with the sounds made now deemed “experimental” actually already present (heard, unheard, imagined) in the original compositions.

Cette collection de mélodies propose des "interprétations" particulières de cantiques en shape note de la tradition du Sacred Harp - en particulier l’édition de 1835 de The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion de William Walker www.loc.gov/resource/music.musihas-200038824/?sp=5&st=image. Le chant à shape notes est une pratique de chant des "early americans" vieille de plus de 200 ans, composée de nombreux recueils d'airs religieux, profanes et populaires dont le but était de favoriser le chant de groupe à grande échelle et une culture musicale généralisée et de mettre en évidence les problèmes complexes d’une nouvelle identité "Américaine" en train de se créer. Plutôt que d'approcher ces sources par le chant, le duo traduit ces interprétations sur une paire d'harmonium Estey en bois vieux de plus de 125 ans - un clin d'œil aux lieux domestiques et spirituels dans lesquels cette musique vernaculaire était habituellement pratiquée. S'appuyant sur leur vaste expérience des pratiques sonores expérimentales, Olencki et Schrey mettent au jour les tonalités combinatoires intérieures et les résonances inharmoniques déjà présentes dans les airs anciens. À travers cette série de traitements, ils visent à éclairer les futurs possibles de ce répertoire, en étendant non seulement la tradition mais aussi les sons fondamentaux eux-mêmes dans de nouvelles configurations. D’une certaine manière, la musique de leur Southern Harmony est la même que celle de Walker, les sons désormais considérés comme « expérimentaux » étant en réalité déjà présents (entendus, inentendus, imaginés) dans les compositions originales.
